Artist Talk: Tom Fawkes

An artist talk with Tom Fawkes on the occasion of his exhibition Recent Work, which was on view at Russo Lee Gallery March 4–27, 2021.

For the month of March, Russo Lee Gallery is pleased to present recent work by Tom Fawkes. A painting by Tom Fawkes is both loose and photographically tight, depending on how the viewer sees it. Known for his paintings of gardens, architecture, and statuary of Europe, a show by Tom Fawkes is a welcome respite from the winter, bringing in the warmth and intellectual grandeur of the Mediterranean.

An MFA graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, Tom Fawkes taught at the University of Oregon and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the 1960s. From 1972–2004, Fawkes taught drawing and painting at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. He has been the recipient of several awards including an OAC fellowship, an NEA fellowship, and a Rockefeller Foundation grant. His works are in numerous collections including Safeco, Microsoft, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Portland Art Museum.
