Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle is now showing at the Seattle Art Museum. The exhibition reunites most of the painter’s 30-panel series painted between 1954 and 1956. The series examines American history from the perspective of the oppressed and overlooked.
After the series was shown in New York in the 1950s the pieces were sold to private collections. This exhibition is the first reunion of the series, featuring two recently discovered panels. Three of the paintings from the series are still lost.
