New Tools for African American Genealogy Research

Archivist Eric Elliott describes the work of his volunteer team in identifying sources for African American genealogy in Archives’ holdings, and in the creation of a pre-1865 database based initially on the listings in the founding church book for St. Philips Moravian Church. Thanks go to Ashley Hauser, Family History Docents Barry Miller and Johnnie Pearson, and Ellen Wallace. Special thanks to Jennifer Holton for data entry expertise and Family History Docent Mary Audrey Apple for stitching together research opportunities, guides and stories. COVID-19 suspended database work in spring 2020, at which time all infant and adult baptism data had been entered. Presentation given January 10, 2019 as a Lunchtime Lecture.
